0514 automotive I had the privilege again this year to serve as the coordinator for the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Finals for Oregon. Each year automotive technology students in high schools across the US take a series of written exams. The top ten schools in each state bring their two best finishers to compete head-to-head to be the first team to properly find and fix bugs intentionally placed in cars. The winning team at the state level advances to represent their state in the National Finals next month in Dearborn, MI. I don't get a chance to hang around with kids all that often, but I've got to say that these 20 competitors were some of the nicest, most respectful, polite and knowledgeable kids I've met since ... well, last year's competition. Oregon's winning team this year comes from St. Helens High School. Congrats to instructor Mike Herdrich and his team of Bryce Clarke and Keagan Mays. Thanks to Ford and AAA for sponsoring this wonderful event, and to Hertz for providing the brand new, zero-miles cars. They deserve the plug.
